Blog post 2 Changing elements

In the play Streetcar Named Desire many events happened in the story that had major effects and led to other events. If just one detail was changed the whole play could have taken a completely different direction.

What could have happened let's say if someone died that was not supposed to.

Say Stanley ended up in a bar fight and got beat to death in act one, that would have saved Blanche from some major trauma. Being raped dramatically took a toll in Blanche’s life and literally drove her crazy to the point of going to a mental hospital. Although if Stanley passed Stella would not have been to well off and she probably would have been super depressed.

Another scenario would be if Stanley did not tell Mitch about the rumors “I wouldn't be expecting Mitch over tonight” (7.103). Mitch and Blanche could have gotten married and moved in together in order for her to avoid the drama with Stanley. Stanley being the horrible man he is probably only told Mitch because of the fact that he does not like Blanche.

What if Stella and Blanche were very close all along? I think if Stella and Blanche were closer as sisters than their relationship with each other would have been better off. In effect to this Stella would have believed Blanche about the rape that took place. “I couldn't believe her story and go on living with Stanley” (3.11.165). Stella is practically saying that she believed Blanche but Stanley was her husband so how could she betray him.

This play has so many possible scenarios that could have happened and so many possible outcomes. When we read we don't think about anything other than the words that's on the page. It isn't until you look back do you think we'll what if this happened or she did this. It's a never ending cycle.
